Who is the The Steely Dane?
Behind the name “The Steely Dane” is Danish (surprise) violinist/violist/composer/arranger Nicolaj Møller Nielsen. I graduated as a violinist from the Carl Nielsen Academy of Music in Denmark in 2004, and spent the next 10 years working as a freelance violinist and later also violist with various symphony orchestras in Denmark and Sweden, most notably in the Copenhagen Phil of youtube fame (yes, that’s me in the viola section). I have completed two artist residencies at the Banff Centre in Canada (Where I met producer Tony Berg who inspired me to start this business), and was the only Scandinavian member of the 2011 Youtube Symphony Orchestra.
Over the years I started to feel constrained by being a “classical” musician only, and began experimenting with arranging and composition. I also developed a strong interest in recording technology, and began collecting studio gear and took courses on recording and music production. Eventually the idea of combining the 3 (writing, playing and recording) things I love doing the most was borne.
In the spring of 2013 I was invited to Hanoi as a guest musician in the Hanoi Ensemble. Here I was lucky enough to meet a fantastic girl, and so I finally gave up my orchestra career and moved to Vietnam to pursue not only love, but also my dream of being an independent string arranger and producer. I am now also studying film scoring with Canadian composer Alain Mayrand and occasionally still freelance with various symphony orchestras around the world.
